How to Draft a Good RTI Application PDF E-mail

The Right to Information Act is a great tool endowed upon the people of India. But tools are useful only when used, and used properly.

Here is a guide to use the RTI Act to obtain the desired result

1. Do not ask for information just for the sake of it. Ask information that you intend to use

2. Make questions in your application short and precise

3. If you suspect some mishandling of responsibilities on someone's part, make sure you ask the name of officers who are responsible for the same

4. Put in a question asking what action will be taken against the erring officers

5. While trying to clean the system using the RTI Act, it is important to note that we shouldn't always be trying to treat the government officers as the accused. We can only succeed when we get the Government Officers working with us and not against us

6. If there is a larger matter that you intend to pursue make sure that you galvanise support around you. Many people asking for the same information in a matter of larger public interest is bound to yield results

7. Share your views and replies with the press and on the site

8. Follow up with action based on the information received. This could be issuing a show cause notice in case of erring practices, sending information to the law enforcement agencies etc.

Hope that all of us will use this great tool with a great sense of responsibility it deserves

It is nice to learn about the noble efforts by RTINation.com to fecilitate the masses in their endeavour to seek accountability in the system of our governance as such. However a poor / BPL catagory citizen may not be able to pay even Rs125/- in normal manner what to say of paying on line through his debit/credit card as such he may not hold one. To ensure the greater and universal reach of ur mission ,plz create RTI Nodel help cells from Panchayat level onwards , some well intentioned NGOs can be of great help to further empower our so called AAM AADMI" . Best wishes

What is the Right to Information Act?

  • Right to Information Act (RTI), passed in 2005 provides to every citizen of India right to ask information held by a Public Authority
  • Now you can quiz the authorities about delays in your passport application, funds spent by your MP or just about anything
  • The information can be asked through Public Information Officers(PIO) in every government department
  • No reason needs to be given for seeking information
  • Cost (directly through the PIO):  Rs. 10 - Rs. 50. Cost (online through rtination): Rs. 125 (View cost break-up)
  • PIO penalised through deduction in salary if information not provided in 30 days

The RTI Act establishes a system of feedback in the government machinery. The government runs on the tax payers money, and now the tax payer can check if his money is being utilised in a proper manner. Just as in a company, the boss who pays the employee has every right to question him and check him. The employee is answerable to his boss.
